Much like the recent storm tore through the northern region the prior day, City swept the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 triumph for their manager's side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This result marked consecutive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since last May, leaving them a significant margin off the league leaders with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capability to manage league and European soccer with a thin squad has been a widely debated topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always seemed this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the opposition, they looked fatigued all game, the landmark win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the bench was questioned.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such workload concerns. Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since healing from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to build for Skinner and his squad from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the strength from City whose potent attack manipulated and tore United open with a superb first half display that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and left United all at sea. Prior to this fixture, the away side had allowed just few in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the wake of Manchester City's creative prowess.

Initial Opportunities

The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. Hemp was at the center of everything from the start, exploiting the gap left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her passes were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple forays forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them alternatives in the wings but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, meanwhile, commanded possession, taunting their rivals and trying to lure them of their organization.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's 7th headed goal of the season.

They added to their lead with another pair of goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was allowed to drive through the center from the back, the field became spacious for City. The influential Casparij received possession on the right before providing a precise ground pass for Bunny Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to drive a shot home from distance.

Final Period

The clearest change came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Former City player Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to register a single shot on target.

The hosts, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Having failed to overcome any opponent who placed above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a commanding position after nine matches.
