Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
