The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
