A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
